Details of Katrina Benefit and New Orleans Mission
On September 16, the Doctors Goodwill Foundation hosted a benefit to raise money for the American Red Cross Katrina Disaster. Physicians, hospitals, businesses and private donors came together and raised more than $220,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf Coast and displaced thousands of people.
More than 450 people attended the benefit and enjoyed an International Food Festival at the Clarion Hotel on Merritt Island. All the food was donated by local restaurants, or prepared by individuals, businesses and physicians. Guests enjoyed cuisine from the Philippines, the Middle East (including sweets from India), Latin America, delicacies from Pascals., Rounding out the evening was homemade Louisiana jambalaya, plus gumbo prepared by husband and wife doctors Ed Swan and Nettie Dunn from Titusville. Music for dancing was provided by the Rich Hall Trio Jazz Band and WFIT Radio Station.
Dr. Stanley Beberman went to New Orleans to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. He worked with local health officials in a medical clinic that was set up at the zoo. They saw about 1000 patients who, although may have had medical insurance, did not have access to normal care.
