The first medical msision of the Doctors' Goodwill Foundation was in TIbet, homeland of the peace loving Dali Lama and is one of the most picturesque places on earth. Five physicians from Parrish Medical Center were accompanied by other doctors from AAPI, BIMDA, FAPI and DOSA along with medical and pre-med students from various colleges in the United States and United Kingdom. The group treated over 1000 patients who received free care for a variety of illnesses and diseases including leprosy, burns, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and ulcers. Surprisingly they did not find any malnutrition or infectious diseases. Overall, Tibetians were healthy. Despite the poverty they are tough, intensely religious and friendly people. Tibetians manage to have a good time despite their poverty.
Parrish Medical Center and other organizations donated medicines, supplies, cardiac monitors and cardiac defribillators to the missions. To nature lovers, trekkers and adventurers, Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar promises treasures of shangri-la. Mansarvor, at 16,000 feet and 320 sq. km is said to possess miraculous healing properties. People beleive that by taking a dip in the lake, one can retain youth with all vigor and vitality. Mt. Kailash is beleived to secure a place in heaven after the end of mortal life.
There were no maps to follow, distances are tremendous and the weather can be harsh. It is considered one of the most difficult treks in Asia and supplies are almost non-existent. Two large trucks carried all mission supplies. Most of the group sufferred some degree of altitude sickness. Everyone agreed though, that the privilege of helping those in need far out-weighed the inconveniences.
